The quake struck at around 4.15pm local time just off the coast of New Britain, Papua New Guinea’s largest offshore island.The extent of the damage, and if there are any casualties, remains unclear.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has not issued a tsunami warning.
In a statement, it said: “Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.”
